As I moved to let the material fall around us, the sound of my cellphone sent ice through my veins. The feeling of Parker’s hands on my thighs barely registered as I tried to jerk away. In an instant, he brought me back down on his lap, his concern not yet set in. “Jesus, Lynn, another debt collector?” I threw my body to the bed, crawling forward to reach for the vest that had been discarded on the floor. “Lynn?”

My hands shook as I tugged the phone out of my pocket, pressing the phone to my ear as quickly as I could. No one called me back-to-back. Well, no one but Aaron called me back-to-back.

“Yes! Yes? I’m here,” I gasped.

My body froze with humiliation. If it wasn’t bad enough that Parker had to see me crawl back towards the asshole— something I foolishly thought would never have to happen again— I was also overwhelmed with the fear that Aaron could somehow know that I was just about to ride another man. As though through the phone he could sense the excitement that only Parker could ever bring me.

“You missed my call.”

“I’m here, Aaron. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I was in the shower and I just—” Parker’s stiffening body jolted me out of my panic. I couldn’t fuck this up— no matter what. The dark-haired man jumped into action, taking a seat next to me. When he noticed me fumble to fix my bra, Parker’s fingers worked quickly.

“I told you to keep your phone on you at all times.” Aaron’s hard voice sent a chill through my body. As I grabbed for Parker’s discarded shirt, the man signalled for me to put the call on speakerphone— not that I was strong enough to follow the demand. The thought of Parker hearing how he treated me, the disgusting things I knew he would say to me, left me absolutely humiliated. Gone forever would be the image of the powerful woman. Before I had a chance to shake my head, Parker snatched the phone out of my hand and placed it on speaker himself.

The sound of Aaron’s repeated growl left Parker frozen beside me.

“Yes!” I gushed. “I’m sorry!” I could feel Parker’s eyes burning into my back, but I couldn’t bring myself to look at him. “How was your day?”

“How was my day?” His inflection sent a shiver through my system. Something’s wrong. I cleared my throat nervously.

“Mm-hmm.”

“How the fuck do you think my day was?”

His darkening tone left me feeling like a little girl all over again— scared of her father and hiding in the closet. Parker’s hand rested on my lower back and the man tried to shift closer to me. I knew none of it was right. The minute he started acting like this, I knew it wasn’t right. I was never his girlfriend. We were never in a relationship. At least, never in a romantic one. Aaron was a parasite, and I was just a reluctant host. He didn’t have a right to make me feel so terrified, and yet, he forced himself into my life anyway.
